Avengers: Infinity War Review
BEWARE! AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR INSIDE!
Holy shit. Right out the gate this movie is coming for you. It opens up with Thanos killing almost all the Asgardians, beating down the hulk, explaining how he destroyed an entire planet, taking an infinity stone, and killing Loki. All this happens in the first ten minutes. I knew from then on this was going to be an intense movie. The film is mainly broken into 3 different stories, each focusing on their own group of heroes. After Thanos destroys the Asgardian ship, Heimdall send Hulk to Earth to warn them. He ends up crashing through Dr. Strange’s Sanctum Sanctorum in an almost identical manner to that of the Silver Surfer from the Infinity Gauntlet comic.
Part of what made this movie so great is that it took key scenes from the comics and faithfully reproduced them, but at the same time made it its own story. The Hulk/Silver Surfer parallel for example. Disney/Marvel don’t have the rights to use Silver Surfer, but they worked with what they had and continued with the story anyway. Another big scene taken right from the comics is the infamous snap. Disney actually killed off half of their own cinematic universe. Granted, we know most of those characters are coming back. We already know that there’s a Guardians 3, a Spider-Man 2, Black Panther 2, so clearly they’ll have to be around for their own films.
I actually think calling it Avengers: Infinity War is a misnomer. This isn’t an Avengers film, it’s a Thanos film. The main character of Infinity War is Thanos. It follows our “protagonist” Thanos, as he goes on a “noble” quest to bring balance to the universe so that it can survive, all the while a group of antagonistic pests try to stop him from saving the universe. It’s a classic Disney tale really.
All jokes aside, this film did an amazing job of balancing such a large cast and making us understand and relate to the characters. Two of the people I saw the movie with cried when Spider-Man disappeared. Because of his Spidey-sense, he know what was happening long before everyone else. When he starts pleading with Tony Stark that he “doesn’t want to go” was probably the most emotional part of the whole film.
The fact that they end the movie with not only Thanos winning, but him retiring to his farm at the end (another scene taken right from the comics), and having “Thanos will return” was a great way to solidify what the opening scene started. Thanos doesn’t fuck around, and the Avengers will have an uphill battle to defeat him.
Avengers: Infinity War is the 19th film in the MCU so far. It’s by far my favorite Avengers film, and it makes my top 5 MCU movies (Civil War still holds the #1 spot). With such a great story and large cast, I’m gonna go ahead and give this movie an 8.5/10
Didn’t like how it ended? Thought it was too hyped up? Or maybe you’re just upset they killed your favorite character. Whatever your reaction let us know in the comments below.
